Ever wonder what happened to that former player or coach? We will dig deep to bring out the stories of today about the legends of the past.
Where Are They Now?
September 27, 2011 - Mike Ammann, after retiring in 2002, he took some time away from the game, but recently he started 247GK Academy, training some of the top goalkeepers in the Northern Virginia area including his own son.
September 2, 2011 - Chris Armas was named Head Women's Soccer Coach at Adelphi University on July 13, 2011. Following a stellar career in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy and Chicago Fire, Armas returned to Long Island and became active in youth coaching. Armas, who earned 66 caps with the United States National Team, returns to his alma mater where he hopes to lead Adelphi to the top of Division II Women's Soccer.
June 8, 2011 - Brian Bliss is currently the technical director for the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer. Prior to that he enjoyed a professional career in Major League Soccer and in Germany while also featuring for the US National team. I met Brian back in April at Crew Stadium and he gave me a tour of the stadium while speaking to me about the Crew and his own exploits as player. In this edition of Where Are They Now, Bliss gives his thoughts on his own playing career at the college and national team level.
May 11, 2011 - Peter Mellor, who enjoyed a highly successful playing career in England as a goalkeeper for Burnley, Fulham, Hereford United and Portsmouth, has spent the last thirty years in the United States helping the sport develop as a coach, an administrator and a mentor. I was fortunate to meet Peter this past February at a Super Y ODP Event and I can't say enough good things about the man. His enthusiasm and love for the game is contagious while his knowledge and experience is expressed so genuinely when speaking to him. He was kind enough to share his thoughts on a variety of topics within US Soccer and I look forward to having another "football talk" with him soon.
April 14, 2011 - Gary Hamilton started his career at Middlesbrough Football Club as an apprentice and made his first team debut at 17yo. He would play over 270 games for Middlesbrough but his career was cut short due to injury. He was recognized by the fans as the best player during the time period 1966-86 and honored with his name on a brick in the Riverside Stadium Brick Road.
March 21, 2011 - John Robinson is a former Wales International who helped Charlton reach EPL and is now based in Florida. Just met John last week but he is a great guy who has an unbelievable passion for the game and wants to pass that on to kids and coaches in the United States. We are lucky to have him here and we wish him the best of luck. We do hope that he was just showing his comical side when he stated that Wales would win the World Cup before the United States and England!
