What moments appear? I see those moments that are played over and over but really only needed to be seen that one time. They will forever be remembered because of what they meant...When they happened...and who created them.
Is it in black & white? A 17 year old Pele flicking the ball over a Swedish defender in the 1958 World Cup Final as the introduction of The King...
Or does it dance in the Oranje of Cruyff?
Is it 1986? England vs Argentina...That is all I need to say and you can see Maradona. The villain. And then the genius. Separated by mere moments.
The list goes on and on...I can see the joy in the face of Toto Schillaci, Roger Milla dancing with the corner flag, Bebeto’s goal celebration in 1994 and the slumped head of Baggio. Then there are the three headers from Zidane. Two that lifted a nation in 1998 and one that sealed a career in 2006. And of course Donovan igniting celebrations across YouTube in 2010.
And you probably have your favorites too...For no other reason than the sublime, Bergkamp’s goal vs Argentina in 1998 might just be at the top of my list for quality...you know the one.
So now, it is almost that time again...The time every four years, the only time one event, one sport, THE WORLD truly is watching. You remember those moments from the past, we all do. And that is why we will all be watching, waiting...What can possibly happen next!? Nothing can be better than what we have already seen, can it? But in the same thought, the last time we all got together someone famously said “you cannot write a script like this…” The long wait has now tipped to anticipation measured in hours. It is time. Enjoy it! Something tells me you will remember it...
