The latest installment of 'Five for Friday' brings us Tiffany Weimer, who recently signed for the Vancouver Whitecaps of the W-League and is the Editor-in-Chief of Our Game Magazine. Weimer is one of the most prolific goal scorers in women's college soccer history, scoring a goal in 17 straight games her senior year and finishing her career at Penn State with 91 goals. She played two years in WPS for FC Gold Pride and the Boston Breakers while also playing professionally in Finland, Brazil and Sweden. I have been fortunate to know Tiff for 10 years and she is one of the most creative players (editor's note: term player was used to distinguish men and women) I have seen and I look forward to seeing her play in person as a professional this summer for the first time. We want banter so it's simple, if you have been megged by numero ocho, comment below.
Soccer Banter: Why Soccer?
Tiffany Weimer: It was love at first sight at 5 years old.. Once I realized I was good, that made it a more serious relationship and one that I've never gotten bored of. There is just something about being on the field and having the freedom to do what you want to do that makes it so appealing. Every 90 minutes is a new forum for a creative escape that you can't always find in this world.
SB: Why #8?
TW: My dad wore eight when he played hockey in high school and my mom told me to pick that number on my first team. It stuck with me ever since. My brother and sister both wore eight when they played. No matter what I have always had the number on me when I played.. an eight t shirt under my jersey if I couldn't have it, an eight gold chain and finally I have it tattooed on my wrist... so I'm never without it.
SB: Why the headband?
TW: The headband started when I was 12 playing basketball. This is around the time I first felt the need to be different from everyone else. So I wore high socks and a headband. I brought that on the field and loved it ... it became a part of me and since then I've only played one game without - and that was because I lost it. Headbands might not be "cool" but it is what you make it.
SB: Why Our Game Magazine?
TW: Our Game Magazine (www.ourgamemagazine.com) is a women's soccer publication run by current and former professional players. We want to grow our sport, so we took it upon ourselves to give players the coverage they deserve. We are a global magazine and try to bring people news that they'd otherwise never hear about, as well as taking a closer look at players already in the spotlight. We want to help create better circumstances for little girls aspiring to play.
SB: Why Vancouver?
TW: Vancouver was an easy choice. The Whitecaps organization is more professional than most professional clubs I've seen. I wanted to be somewhere where I could make an impact on a team, while looking to make strides forward as a player. The role of ambassador allows me to be involved in the growth of the club off the field with goals to be one of the top clubs in the world.
