Sermanni Out, Who's Next?

Late on Sunday evening the most talked about women's soccer team in the world made quite a controversial move - removing their head coach.  After defeating China 2-0 earlier in the day, Tom Sermanni was told by US Soccer president, Sunil Gulati, that the team was heading in a new direction.  The news was met with much speculation including whispers of player's pressuring US Soccer into removing Sermanni.  We might never know the true story of why US Soccer decided to remove a coach that was so-liked by his peers, but the next question is who will US Soccer appoint next?  Soccer Banter posed this question to David Copeland-Smith and Terry Foley. Between the two of them, they came up with five different names. Copeland-Smith is the man behind Beast Mode Soccer, a technical training program for all players, from AYSO to international superstars like Alex Morgan and Landon Donovan. Foley is the President and Technical Director for FC Virginia and was previously the General Manager for the Philadelphia Independence.

David Copeland-Smith (@BeastModeSoccer): I have three people in mind; Jill Ellis, Tony Gustavsson and Tracey Kevins.

Jill knows the system, she knows the players and I think she knows how to get the best out of those players. Whether she wants the job is another question though.

Tony Gustavsson is another one who knows the system because he was Pia's assistant in 2012. He has a good record and obviously doing great at Tyresö.

Tracey Kevins would be a big outsider but she is an absolutely phenomenal coach. She came over here from the UK last year to join the LA Strikers in the W-League and literally turned the team around in one season. Watching her coach is great, she is so organized but the delivery of the session is an a way that players (both veterans and college players) understand and get on board. Although a big outside chance, it would be a great appointment for US Soccer, and if not, watch out for her this season with the newly formed LA Blues as part of a coaching combo with Charlie Naimo.

There are some great coaches out there; Randy Waldrum, Steve Swanson, Paul Riley but right now, I would love to see one of the above three take it and the team to the next level.

Terry Foley (@Terry_Foley): I think having worked with Paul Riley he would be the perfect man for the job, if not Paul somebody like Abner Rogers (LA Sol). Both of these coaches can handle big personalities in the team and dressing room, and let’s be honest everybody know there are a lot of big ones in the USWNT. These coaches are also winners at the highest level and not afraid to make tough decisions. Everyone needs to understand the current squad is getting older and the rest of the world is catching or have caught the USWNT up. The USSF mentality of win now and do not worry about development of the young players is going to be a challenge for any new Coach.
