First day of preseason had arrived and as always, there was massive excitement. The day was going to be similar to past years with the usual meetings, medical exams, media day, etc. However this time around, it was significantly different for me. I was entering a new chapter in my coaching career. Now in my 13th collegiate season (just felt old typing that), I was afforded the opportunity to be the new leader of the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer program.
As I was driving in on Main St. through UNH’s campus, many thoughts began to travel through my mind; mostly quick snap shots of my coaching journey. Those individuals and experiences had prepared me for what I was about to begin. I was excited, motivated and ready. My thoughts varied, but centered around ‘people’ who played significant roles in my journey and I wouldn’t do this blog justice (or the start to my head coaching career) if I didn’t recognize that as they helped shape, challenge and educate me.
To my family and friends, for embracing my choice of profession because it was never a job, but rather my passion, my way of life. You continue to provide the necessary support and care one needs in achieving his or her goals. For that, I am forever thankful.
To my coaching mentors (you know who you are), you have prepared me for this amazing journey. You were and continue to be influential in my career. I’ll forever remember where it started, the path along the way and the process taken to arrive as a proud head coach of the UNH program. For that, I am forever thankful.
To every single player I’ve coached and continue to coach, YOU are the reasons why my passion is beyond enjoyable. I have and will always work for you! The institutions and/or administrator(s) provide my platform; but my time & efforts will always be for you! I try my best to make your experiences challenging but rewarding, demanding but within reason and use the game to develop life long skills. I strive every day with the hope I’m impacting you, as much as, you are impacting me. Although there are adverse moments along the way, you make my way of life beyond rewarding and enjoyable. Without you, my way of life does not exist. For that, I am forever thankful.
And to my current staff, thank you in advance. To Los, Coach K (UNH version), Jo, Mo (aka: MoJo), Meg & posse and Coach Ciani (FYI, I like nicknames because I can't pronounce names properly) - Thank you for all the time, effort, and energy you put forth. Thank you for the trust, loyalty, belief, and work ethic. You make me better every day and as I strive to maximize this journey, I hope to do the same for you.
It has been a long wait that many do not get the opportunity to experience. I am excited, honored and humbled to be the head coach at UNH. I was ecstatic on the first day of preseason to be the leader of a program at an incredible institution within an athletic department filled with a rich tradition of success, pride, and excellence. The wait was worth it, no matter how long it took to arrive. I was ready to maximize the opportunity provided to me by my athletic director, Marty Scarano, who’s been an incredible partner and mentor to me. And as he advised me; “… enjoy the journey because it’s all about the chase not the destination …”. I am prepared and ready for a new beginning that will afford me a plethora of new experiences along the way. Go Cats!
