It was a 7 PM game under the lights, which is always exciting. We need this win to bounce back from last weekend. They scored within the first few minutes which put us in a hole early. We got in a habit of this last year, shooting ourselves in the foot early. It is so frustrating and really sets you back. They came out fast and physical. Although we are a small bunch with our tallest player a 5’10 forward and the rest of us are no taller than 5’7, I think this was the first game that we actually came out and matched them physically. The game was fairly even but we had to send more numbers forward and take chances toward the end of the game… a loss is a loss whether its 1-0 or 3-0. We changed formations and they scored two more goals toward the end of the second half. Daphne scored a goal late in the second half and after that we sent everything forward over the top and took our chances but we wound up losing 3-1. We were disappointed in the result but we have to focus on the next game on Sunday vs VCU.
We were all psyched to play VCU, the warm up was very sharp and we were dying for a win. The first half was a bit slow, we matched them physically but the heat caused us to struggle when it came to taking chances going forward. The first half ended scoreless and we came out in a 4-4-2 in the second half to try to get more going in the attacking end. Having a second forward gave us more options going forward and we were able to scrum up a goal in the middle of the half. Ingrid Wells floated a ball into the box to Camille Trujillo’s head and she flicked it in. Camille was our leading scorer last year and this was her first goal of the season so she was very excited. The last five to ten minutes we started to run the clock down. Ingrid, Camille and I just kick the ball long and to the corner flag, chase it down, and then try to keep it down there as long as possible while getting mauled by the other team. We’ve all been on the other side of this. I hate being the team that is down one goal and the other team walks to throw the ball in… but it’s part of the game. Finally the final whistle blew and we were able to come out on top with a 1-0 win. We needed this win under our belts and now we get to be back at home next weekend for a tough JMU team and St. Francis.
