Steve Coxon: I believe sometimes things are just meant to happen. Out of the blue I received a phone call from Costas asking me if I was interested in discussing some soccer expansion plans. I had not talked to Costas in 5 years since our coaching days. The next day I received an email form the USL asking us if we were interested in putting a PDL team together. Six months later a new PDL franchise was born and we can't be more excited.
SB: What is your own background in the game and what will your role be with the franchise?
SC: It was always a goal of mine to get back into the USL. I played in the USL Pro (Then the A-League) for 8 years and had a blast. The team folded in 2002 and Connecticut has not had a soccer franchise since. We feel that the state is more then ready to support a PDL team and the feedback so far has been outstanding. I am one of the majority owners and I will be acting as the president of the club.
SB: The USL recently made the announcement that CFC Azul has been accepted to the PDL, explain what needed to be done for this to happen?
We then spent a month negotiating terms and contracts with the league and our legal team. We still have plenty of work to do, now the fun begins hiring coaches, signing players, working with stadiums, sponsors and investors. The
list is endless.
SB: The team is official, what is next - where is the club with sponsors, coaches, players, a home field etc?
SC: We are hoping to make a coaching announcement over the next few days and we have our first tryout set for January 4th at CFC Arena in Hamden, Connecticut.
We are also in negotiations with a stadium in the state and hope to have that deal inked before January 1st.
Our first concrete deadline is the CJSA Soccer Convention over the weekend of January 27th and 28th, where we will have a booth so plenty of work to do to be ready for that.
In the next edition of 'Building a PDL Franchise', we will get an update on the first Head Coach for the club, tryouts and hopefully find out some of the day-to-day banter involved with CFC Azul.
